Have we found the best view in Spain?
Los Monteros Hill Club was simply outstanding
A while ago my wife and I had a relaxing week away. We’d booked a rather special luxury apartment at the Los Monteros Hill Club ‘above’ Marbella to celebrate our sixth wedding anniversary – our first holiday without the kids in four years. We reckon that this place has some of the best sea views in Spain. The penthouse we rented at the Club was just a few minutes drive from the town and after arriving in the late afternoon after an hour’s transfer from the airport, we spent our first evening watching the most amazing sunset over Marbella, and the coast.
The Club is set in a gated compound, and on arrival you’re given remotes for the electronic gates to the underground parking area. There’s plenty of high-tech security here so it gives you peace of mind that your belongings will be safe in the apartment and you don’t have to hide everything (like we’ve had to do on many other trips to Spain). If you’re a little less trusting than us of the 24-hour on-site security, there’s a fab electronic safe in the apartment.
The apartment we rented was more like a VIP suite than a rental villa. The standard of everything was above and beyond a typical 5-star property – more like 7-star Dubai – ultra smart and modern. The apartment has lots of high-tech gadgets including electric ‘black-out’ shutters for ‘the morning after the night before’ (which came in handy a few times) a wireless alarm system that can be controlled from any room, under floor heating and a state-of-the art kitchen.
We spent most days lounging by the club pool or on our sun deck after late starts, headed to the coast for long lunches and spent time toasting our anniversary from our Jacuzzi looking out at the spectacular view. We even managed to use the gym and sauna a couple of times – although we didn’t make it to the on-site tennis court. I also treated my wife to a mini spa day as an anniversary present as she promised it would turn her into a ‘new woman’. (I couldn’t possibly comment!)
Having promised her it would be a ‘golf-free week’ of good food, sun and relaxation, I have to admit there was one day when I dropped her off in town to do some clothes shopping and ‘checked out’ the nearby Marbella Golf Country Club. Apart from visiting far too many designer shops our only other outings during the day were to a couple of nearby beaches, Puerto Banus marina – for a bit of a wander, some great tapas and plenty of yacht gazing. Other than that we chose to stay at the club during the day as it offered such peace and tranquility compared to the town below, along with all facilities. It was just a wonderful escape with plenty of warm sunshine and clean, clear air away from the bustle of the coast.
We met two other couples by the pool at the club and had one lively evening out in a Puerto Banus casino after a memorable Chinese meal at Asiatico Zen.
Marbella has so many great restaurants offering all types of food that we spent time during the day choosing which restaurant to book the next evening from our guide books. We ate at ‘Beckitt’s’ in downtown Marbella as we’d noticed lots of locals eating there and weren’t disappointed, as the food was great. We also had an excellent meal at the ultra modern Sukhothai – although you’ll find it hard to pick a Thai restaurant given the number here. You can find any cuisine you want in Marbella at an incredibly high standard – so if like us you’re ‘foodies’, it’s a great place to come. We also felt the prices were excellent when compared with outlets of an equivalent standard in the UK.
This was our first time at Los Monteros Hill Club but we’ll be back like a shot at the next opportunity – it’s just such a peaceful location, with an amazing penthouse and for me – one of the best views in the world. Hire a car and you’ve got the ultimate hillside hide-away from which to explore at your leisure. We’ve already recommended this apartment to friends, as, in our opinion, it really doesn’t get much better than this. Who knows, we may even come back with our friends, as the apartment’s easily big enough for four or six.
