Billy Bragg is threatening to withhold his taxes if Bankers who work for ‘nationalised’ banks get more than a £25,000 bonus.

Billy being Billy gets massive coverage for his stand against this venal and corrupt government that stands for the ‘social justice’ he sings about.Billy BraggHe wants to pay his taxes for nurses, doctors and soldiers. But Billy, what you don’t understand is that giving your hard earned cash to the government is about the very worst way you can pay for doctors, nurses and soldiers. Giving money to the government is also about having to support the professional politicians in the duck houses they have become accustomed to, the raft of public servants who produce nothing useful in Quangos, Local Authorities, Regional Authorities, devolved government and the EU. It does not go to frontline services as you well know.

I will give you a short list of functioning ‘voluntary’ organisations that actually work and do what they do efficiently without having to put a gun to people’s heads and say give me 65% of your cash in the form of HMRC.

The RNLI.

The National Trust.

The various County Helicopter Trusts.

Mountain Rescue.

Compare how the public feel about these organisations as compared to government run organisations. Even the Waterways want to opt out of government control and become a damp version of the National Trust.

The government has sent our soldiers to fight wars woefully under equipped, short of helicopters, duff cheap ammunition etc. Defence is the only legitimate function of government and they cannot even do that right.

Billy, a Tax strike by all of us is the right thing to do, because it is the only thing that will ever stop big government, by cutting off its life blood. However, you want to be selective against the big evil incompetent banks in withholding your taxes. We should withhold our taxes from big evil government full stop, until we have transparency, accountability and an end to professional politicians who have never had a job in their lives.

No Taxation without Representation – it worked with Ship Money and the Bishops wars in the 1640’s, and in 1776. Let’s start now!

It also worked for some with the poll tax. Many got away with not paying in the end instead of ending up in jail because there were so many of them.

But in that case the poll tax rebels were almost incited into it by the Labour movement as far as I can recall.

Can’t see the Tories asking us to do the same, because they are going to need every penny they can squeeze from us (and some more) in a few month time.

Excellent. Well done Bragg. This is today’s equivalent of chaining yourself to the railings of parliament, Pankhurst style.
