An explosion possibly caused by a car bomb has killed two people in the Norwegian capital of Oslo and injured many others.
The Police released a statement saying “A powerful explosion has taken place in the government quarter“.
Reports all seem to point to a terrorist attack on the government headquarters which include the offices for Norwegian Prime Minister, Jens Stoltenberg although no one has as yet claimed responsibility for the attack.
There are reports from local media that the car bomb was not isolated to a single blast and there could have been multiple explosions which blew out nearly all the windows in the Government headquaters with buildings five blocks away showing signs of damage.
The explosions could be heard right across the normally peaceful city which now has dark smoke emanating from the scene of the explosion with many fires still billowing smoke into the sky from the prime minister’s building.
Speaking to the BBC the head of communications for the Norwegian Red Cross, Oistein Mjarum said “There was a massive explosion which could be heard over the capital Oslo“.
The motivation for the attack is unsure seeing as it could be linked to the Norwegian military presence in Afghanistan and previous involvement in Libya.
Another motivation sited for the attack is the government’s lack of action against the Norwegian newspaper Aftenposten, which reprinted the highly controversial cartoons of the prophet Mohammed which were previously printed by Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten and drawn by cartoonist Kurt Westergaard.
