Since then there has been a denial by the Americans, but I'm sure they need a UK fully involved in the EU and fighting for the US's best interests; they'd be foolish to want anything else.

The Tories had to do the best they could in distancing themselves from those equivalent parties in the EU that want more integration than the Conservatives can stomach.

But there are no parties in the EU that they can exactly align with. The Labour party have uneasy alliances too.

This may be an indicator that the EU cannot last very long.

I'm not sure the US wants the EU to become too cohesive and therefore too powerful.

I've always expected the Lisbon constitution/Treaty to be passed and much further integration. No nation state wants to be the wrong side of a massive set of trading barriers. There is also the not unimportant question of how to negotiate energy contracts with Russia.

There are so many contradictions within the EU I give it, perhaps, 30-70 years before collapse. It is no more than a guess what would emerge after that; chaos or mini-power blocs of some sort perhaps. I imagine the 9 English EU regions would emerge working together, but perhaps without the rest of the UK. But anything is possible - who knows - Scotland might work with a united Ireland and the 3 northern English regions in one bloc - with the rest of England and Wales forming another. Or all 13 EU regions of the British Isles working together.

If America is to have serious influence within the EU, they need to have close allies in influential positions on the inside; including the UK.

America and many politicians within Europe are concerned that if the EU doesn't seem to be a serious going concern, Germany's links with Russia will grow stronger. Look up what Gerhard Schröder (German Ex-Chancellor) is up to in his "retirement"; Stout defender of Putin and chairman of the board of a vital (to Russia) Russian-German pipeline.

To be honest I cannot see how the EU can survive while the people of the EU are totally bypassed. The EU politicians realise the need to ignore national interests to make the EU work, but don't seem to understand that this will lead to their project's final destruction.

Once the people pf Europe realise they are being ignored en masse I'm fervently hoping this house of cards will collapse. Not because I am anti-Europe, but because I am pro democracy.

True democracy is a rarity in the world, other systems of government can and do exist. We may not like what they have to offer but they can be stable and survive long-term. Plus, alas, global power is shifting away from the west (where most of the democracies exist).

Worth mentioned that other similar EU-like regional blocs look like appearing.

Is the average man or women in the street really likely to protest en masse over the fact that the EU isn't democratic enough? I'm not sure that people think in that abstract way - especially if they are kept quiet with 'bread and circuses'. Most people already have a very low expectation of Westminster; the EU will only seem more of the same.

But, as mentioned, I don't think the EU will last for too long in its current shape.

Disappointing view of the British public but, sadly, probably true.
