The Occupy London has taken over a corner of Victoria Park, moving in a variety of supplies, including food and water donated to the cause. This is a long process, and (these are) the seeds of this very long process, Lisa Lanthier, 27, of London said Sunday afternoon. At the end of the day, theres not going to be one particular thing thats going to make us go home.
Chanting We are the 99 per cent, and This is what democracy looks like, the occupiers marched into the park Saturday afternoon, following a more than hour-long general assembly meeting in Campbell Park.
The meeting was similar to those the protesters will continue to have daily to organize their thoughts and actions.
(We use) hand gestures to use non-verbal communication to indicate agreement or a problem with what someones saying, said Laura Robinson, 20, of London. Everyone is allowed to have their say.
Although facilitators led the meetings, the ideals of democracy and inclusiveness are taken to heart.
The facilitators change every day, and theres no one group of people who are in charge. Its a group of everyone, Robinson said.
Another technique used during the meetings is the peoples microphone.
I will say a short sentence, and everyone else will repeat it back, Lanthier said. That allows for everyone to hear what is going on, but for me not to be in a position of power holding a microphone.
It also facilitates active listening (because) people repeat the words and understand them before they jump in with an interruption.
