News that UK diplomats are involved in discussions this morning about UK military involvement in Mali – despite previous assurances by the Government that there would be “no boots on the ground” – raises important questions, UKIP defence procurement spokesman Lord Hesketh said today.
“This government has repeatedly said that any British involvement would be strictly non-combat, but this sort of claim has been made before.
“Mr Hague and Mr Hammond need to tell us, and tell us now, if British troops are going to a war zone on the say-so of the EU.
“There is no way British personnel should be put at risk in this European adventure, particularly if it is directed by Baroness Ashton, the EU’s Defence and Foreign Affairs supremo.”

It’s a longer game than Mali.
It’s about the full formation of an EU defence force and getting public acceptance of the idea.
Especially if it can be shown that the UK is not always at the pointy end as stated at emergency questions just now when we were told that there would only be 40 support personnel involved – if they were needed.
