Jamie Bulger’s Killer Back Behind Bars

James BulgerWay, way back on 13th February 1993 CCTV footage from the ‘Strand’ shopping centre in Liverpool captured the chilling footage of a two year old toddler being led away by the hand by two other children who would go on to torture and bludgeon him to death.

Each time I see the footage it makes me feel physically sick. The two year old, as we all know now, was little Jamie Bulger. The two 10 year old murderers were Jon Venables and Robert Thompson.

Venables and Thompson took Jamie to a railway line where they threw stones at him, stuffed batteries into his mouth and hit him repeatedly with a heavy bar. They then hid his lifeless body on the railway line. When the body was discovered it was too badly injured and dismembered to identify by normal means.

During their Police interview the killers described how the child was calling for his mother as they assaulted him.

If there has ever been a case for human beings to be exterminated it is this one. I accept that Venables and Thomson were children at the time too. What I also accept, is that some people, even children of 10, can be evil to the core! No one will ever convince me that the actions carried out by these two children all those years ago demonstrated anything else.

Venables and Thompson served less that 8 years for the killing of Jamie Bulger and were released when they were young adults in order to re-build their lives. They were given new identities and witness protection which will have cost an obscene amount of taxpayers’ money.

I wonder what the parents of Jamie Bulger were given other than that of their own life sentence.

Jon Venables, now 27 years old, is back in prison for breaching his ‘life licence’. Another kick of sand into Jamie’s parents faces! Despite much press speculation, what Venables actually did to get his licence revoked is not currently public knowledge but, one must draw the conclusion that it must be something pretty significant to force the authorities to risk blowing his new identity.

Justice Secretary, Jack Straw, has told us that it is not in the public interest to disclose details of the breach. Once again Straw has showcased his ability to get things totally wrong when making that statement. It is absolutely in the public interest to know what the child murderer had done. After all we have been paying for his new life which he has seen fit to throw away!

One would think that since Venables has adequately shown that he has no control over his behaviour neither as a child, nor now it would seem as an adult, he should stay behind bars for an acceptable term for the killing of Jamie Bulger. This will not be that case though. He will serve some time but once again be released to continue his life. If it is suspected that his identity has been compromised, he will start again with his third set of identification papers, and once again, no one will know, until he re-offends.

He was given a chance, a chance that he never gave to Jamie Bulger, that of a life. He blew that chance and should not be given another. I hope, for his sake that his true identity is not uncovered by inmates in whatever prison he finds himself.

Or would that be true justice I wonder?

Give us the facts. Why cannot the Judiciary instigate a “Judge only Trial” instead of using a Jury.

  2. I agree with the author Robert Jones of this article. Although I believe the European Courts who reduced their sentences were wholly wrong to have done so and I sincerely hope they regret their decision. Venables should not be given another identity, why should he, he revoked the rules of his life licence, he should not have another chance, Jamie Bulger didn’t. If he had committed this henious crime when an adult would he have received a new identity, no, so treat him the same as any other criminal, with the contempt he deserves.

having lived in the UK for almost a year I was amazed at how lenient the government is on crimes like this but how hard they come down on people who cant pay poll tax or who speed or who try to drive into their capital city!! it seemed to me the wooly dopey liberals who run the class orientated system hate their regular law abiding citizens but reward their murderers!! I couldnt get over how unsafe i felt on the streets of Kent of a night!!! Britian will have to come down harder on its criminals or soon it will be a violent mad max style untry where no sane minded person would go! I left I certainly will never go back but its a pity I had good friends there 4 of whom have decided to emigrate!!! but still the people need to rise & demand this guy stays in jail Britian get a back bone!!!

The thing that really annoys me is that when they were in court for butchering that poor little boy, their defence was they had sad backgrounds and were too young to understand the actual impact of their crimes. This is bull. What any decent system would have done is look at the real fact, which is. If two ten year olds can take the effects of their shabby upbringing and hardknock life and turn them into a cold and calculated murder, taking everything bad that happened to them and turn it into a game where at first they planned on snatching a kid and throwing him infront of a god damn car, but instead tortured his young soul and left him on a railway track hopping a train to run him over and cover up their awful crime!!!! Any decent system would have surelt thought of the future and what these twoscumbags would be capable of when they were older. Seriously like, ten year olds don’t think that way. God knows what goes on in their dark minds. They were given a sentence that was more like a holiday and a new alias worth a fortune, they’ve been given no reason to feel remorse and surely could not have changed when given no reaL LABOUR!
They should be chained up in a stinking pit and starved! They are monsters.

    RIP Jamie

Surely , even under his new name . he would have to be on the sex affenders list . If not , then why not . It is all wrong , it needs to be looked at and somethng done .

  7. halima says:

I remember this story. He was around my age when he killed Jamie. I could never think something like that up at the age of 10. It was planned and calculated. I could not understand how he did it. The authorities need to get their act together and punish him properly.

  8. ann amy mason says:

they should never of being givin new names in the first place who was there to give jamie a second chance ,they should of done more than 8 years and in an adult prision other people who kill dont get given new names ,i would love to be put in a room with the pair of them, ten or not from broken homes or not for some one to do that to a little baby are pure evil and shouldnt be allowed on the streets?

  9. lynsey says:

i think having 5 kids of my own kids know at that age the difference between right and wrong and what they did to that little boy was horrendous and whether they were kids or not deserve to serve a sentence fit for an adult and should not be given a new life if a child of that age can commit a crime like that then just think what they are capable of when they are adults it appauls me to think there could be people like that living near where I have my children no wonder I dont let my kids out my sight even at 16
I think the government needs to sort this from any age a crime is a crime regardless how old the perpertrator is

  10. ed says:

Your big mistake was describing the pair as “human beings”. Scum would be too good a word.

  11. steven says:

I remember this I was a little kid 6 and my mum was watching the news and crying for Jamie. I could not sleep in my own bed I thought them boys would kill me.

Anyway them killers make me feel sick. They can’t walk street and make friends as soon as someone finds out who they really are they will be dead the same day and good and hope they burn in hell for good and Jamie looking down at them with god.
Anyway R.I.P little man good bless.

WHY is there NO mention of Jamie’s mother NEGLECTING to look after her son?

She was the one RESPONSIBLE for all of this, she was the one who was distracted; gossiping, shopping etc without any idea where her son was!!

But she states that the ‘killers’ were evil etc etc but no mention of her involvement in all of this. She alone had the responsibility to CARE and SECURE her son’s safety!

There is something very wrong here.

  14. Mrs Sarah Unsworth says:

I have just watched the news and then decided to look on line to get the facts. I remember this case when it happened and I remember how I felt then about these two animals that we label children, they commited the worst crime imaginable and we re invent them and pay them to move on. I will never understand as long as I live how we can forgive them and let them have a normal life. If I was little Jamies mum I would hunt the bastard down and kill him myself. Do us all a favour put him back in prison and leave him to rott, he dosn’t deserve to live, he took a life with no regard for his actions or for that poor little boy. If any one can get a message to Jamies mum tell her toread “The Shack” I hope it helps her. x RIP Jamie

  15. Robert Jones says:

    Pauline,
I do not know, nor have I ever met Jamies’s mother but I am sure that not a day goes by when she does not blame herself for what happened. But I’m afraid to suggest that she is the one responsibe for the brutal actions of the two killers is absurd.
Jack Straw said yesturday that to pubicise the details of Jon Venables breach of licence would compromise any future trial. Perhaps he is right but what is also absurd is the implication that a trial in this day and age can not be carried out in private. If he decides to plead guilty to whatever it is he has done, not even a jury needs to be present.
Private trials where a Judge stands alone are not that unusual and are utilised where witnes intimidation is an issue.
The fact I believe is this. Jack Straw does not want to release the details because it will display the failings of the justice system and underline the undue leniency handed out thirteen years ago.
I do not want to know who Venabales now is, nor what prison he is, or even the full details of the alleged crime. But I believe we do deserve to know, albit in general terms what he has done.
Yet agin we find ourselves in the frustrating situation of the ‘3P’s’ which criminals benifit from in our weak and diluted society, ‘Protection, Protection, Protection’.

  16. simone glos says:

How Could you possibly blame Jamie’s mum, we all have our moments as mums where we get gossiping kids get excited and run off and yeh some times we dont realise they are not by our side, but no one deserves to have there child taken away from them like that just for not realising they are not by our side….

I think Jamies mum’s has had enough punishment by loosing her little boy and having to live with it, without people making digs at her!!

I am the same age as the killers and I remember seeing this on tv and feeling so sick and horrified, If I knew it was wrong they dam well did, they should bring back the death penalty (with exeptions) and they should of been summend to it…instead they get a new identity, what a crazy world we live it!!!

  17. chris says:

i know what happend to that little child was disgusting, but what makes me very angry is the mother being on tv all the time saying she should be told all about the resent court case she does not its a pitty that she was not looking after her child better he would be still be alive to day, you should be feeling very quilty for not looking after your child better, i have two children, and at that age they were never left for two seconds on there own, so jamies mother just go away you have no rights to knowing any thing about what is happening to your childs killers, he would be still here if you had looked after him better
