Red WineAnother reason to drink wine has been discovered. Drinking it doesn’t actually make women fat.

After years of being told to lay off of the odd glass of red for fear of piling on the pounds, new research has found that not only is drinking red wine beneficial to the heart, lungs and arteries, the calories it contains may be burnt off by the liver in the form of heat not added fat.

Lu Wang, MD, PhD, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston, Mass. Conducted a survey of over 19,000 women of healthy weight and asked them about their drinking habits. Over the 13 year study period it was found that the 38% of them who were teetotallers that gained the most weight.

It also seemed that the more they drank the less weight they gained with red wine drinkers faring the best.

The report also went on to say that there was no clear connection between weight gain and alcohol consumption.

But of course, as ever, moderation is the key. Red wine should not be viewed as an aid weight loss. Whilst beneficial in some areas the damage alcohol causes in others is also well documented. The NHS says that excess use of alcohol can cause strokes, high blood pressure, depression, liver disease and cancer as well as adversely affecting fertility. Other research has shown that moderate use of alcohol reduces mortality.

So, for a long healthy and happy life a daily tipple is recommended for most of us it seems. I think that this makes red wine a health food and shouldn’t it therefore be nil tax rated?
