It looks like the Bond franchise has been shaken but not stirred with the news that Ian Fleming's character James Bond is back for his 23rd film and this time it will be Sam Mendes in the director's chair.
The film is scheduled to go into production at the end of this year with the screenplay written by Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and John Logan.
Mendes's take on Bond should see further character development involved which could produce a few surprises. After all it was his in depth magnetic character development that made his 1999 film American Beauty the Oscar winner that it was.
However there is doubt amongst some fans to whether or not Sam Mendes is the man for the job and would favour an action director for the role instead of a namby pamby arty director.
This as yet untitled film will also see Daniel Craig return to the role of British secret agent James Bond (007) with his grittier, colder and more impassioned take on the much loved her. But again the fans demand that he is placed in the hands of a director who will forego the subtleties and get the gadgets back out for Bond to play with.
At the end of the day the film's producers and studio want returns and if artistic licence is cutting the profit flow then the artistic licence must be cut and especially when you consider the budgets involved in making a Bond film.
But a fusion of Mendes and high action pressure from the studios and producers could produce some very interesting results.
