Russian Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov has warned against any military strike on Iran.
In what could be interpreted as support for the Islamic republic, Lavrov said "It would be a very serious mistake fraught with unpredictable consequences,"
"Military intervention only leads to a multiple rise in casualties and human suffering,"
His response comes after Israeli politicians such as President Shimon Peres's comments on Iran in which he said that a military strike on Iran was becoming "more and more likely."
But Peres is not alone in his call for aggression against Iran.
Israeli Defence Minister, Ehud Barak and Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu have been hard at work in persuading the Israeli cabinet to attack Iran.
Everything hinges on the results of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) report into Iran's nuclear program and whether or not they are enriching uranium to produce a nuclear bomb and also if they have actually undertaken steps towards building one.
The question of how far down the line they are in building a nuclear weapon (if that is the Iranian government's intention) is also of great significance in mobilising military support from countries sympathetic to Israel and any risk posed to the Jewish nation by Iran.
However it comes as no surprise that Russia should be supportive of Iran when you consider the fact that both Russian and Pakistani scientists were involved in assisting Iran in it's nuclear ambitions which may include the development of nuclear warheads.
The United States and the United Kingdom have both been in discussions with Israel in planning a coordinated attack on Iran should the go ahead be given from their respective leaders.
One thing that does come as great concern to scholars who have studied the Middle Eastern political situation is the amount of military support that Iran may have from Russia and China should a coalition attack take place.
It would be foolhardy to think that Iran is in the same position as Iraq or Libya were.
Some commentators have speculated that the possibility of support from Russia and China in a war against Israel could be the reason behind the Iranian government's confidence that any strike against them would be a mistake.
If there is backing from two of the world's most powerful superpowers then we arevon the precipice of a 3rd World War but this time of the nuclear variety.
This writer is left wondering if we are observing at Biblical prophecy unfolding before our very eyes.
