Edward Woollard, the protester who threw the fire extinguisher from the seventh floor-rooftop of the Millbank Conservative campaign headquarters at last years student fees protests, has been jailed for two years and eight months.
The 18 year old protester from Dibden Purlieu in Hampshire, who broke into the Conservative party headquarters with other protesters, will serve his sentence in a young offenders institution.
Woollard's mother Tania Garwood has been praised for her part in convincing him to hand himself in to the authorities after the incident on November the 10th in which he was photographed.
The Judge said "It is deeply regrettable, indeed a shocking thing, for a court to have to sentence a young man such as you to a substantial term of custody".
He went on to add "But the courts have a duty to provide the community with such protection from violence as they can and this means sending out a very clear message to anyone minded to behave in this way that an offence of this seriousness will not be tolerated".
"Nevertheless I shall take into account in your favour the extraordinary and courageous conduct of your mother, which resulted in you giving yourself up to the police so quickly."
Brave Tania Garwood broke down in tears as the sentence was read in Southward Crown Court to her son. The judge took into account his age, the fact he had no previous convictions and the fact that he pleaded guilty at the earliest opportunity.
I think in this case the court understood the acts of folly young men will indulge in and the justifiable anger of the younger generation who will be saddled with the debt to maintain the status quo for the previous generation.
After all a certain member of the Bullingdon club of which the Prime Minister David Cameron and Boris Johnson the Mayor of London were members of is reported to have thrown a plant pot through a restaurant window in Oxford with the potential of causing great harm to others yet has not been prosecuted or vilified.
You never know, it may have been one of the aforementioned Bullingdon members.
