My contention is that overall inflation will not rise by much in the coming year, if at all. However, inflation for big ticket items may well go down as inflation for everyday essentials will, I believe, start going up.

I have therefore, on a completely unscientific basis, chosen 38 items, some of which I buy some I don’t, to form a benchmark. These items are selected from the sort of items families buy every week, i.e. those that have the most immediate effect on the home finances.Every week on or about the same day I will check these prices and publish them here.

The source is a small branch of a national supermarket chain in a local town of average size. The petrol prices come from the outlet closest to the town centre.

I will choose the same item every week and if it’s on offer then it will be recorded at the offer price.

I make no apology for the relatively small selection and some readers may not agree with it. But it is my list. It would be helpful if others could do this with their own lists and tell us of their findings, which we will be happy to publish.

Next week I will publish the new prices and start a graph going.

The prices are to three decimal places of pounds as petrol and diesel prices are nearly always priced to decimal points of pence.

As I say, this is totally unscientific, but the only other thing to do is believe what the government and supermarkets are telling you.
